Accessibility

Made for everyone who loved them

Grandparents, old friends, people using screen readers, and anyone recording on an older phone. Everyone should be able to take part.

Our goal

We design Dearly to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We design for keyboards, screen readers, large text and reduced motion, and we are testing every page.

What we design for

  • Text that is easy to read: at least 18 pixels on phones, with strong contrast and no light grey type.
  • Buttons large enough to tap comfortably, and controls you can reach with a keyboard.
  • A clear label on every form field, and errors that explain what to do next.
  • Text descriptions for pictures that carry meaning, while decorative ones stay out of the way of screen readers.
  • Still pages when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Films can include captions. If your family needs them, tell us and we’ll make sure they’re on.

Recording a message

Recording uses your camera and microphone in a supported browser. If recording in the browser doesn’t work for you, you can upload a video you’ve already recorded instead, or ask someone you trust to record with you.

If anything gets in the way, write to us and we’ll find another way for your voice to be part of the film.

What we’re still improving

Some older browsers and the small browsers inside messaging apps can block the camera or microphone. When that happens, open the link in your phone’s main browser, such as Safari or Chrome. We’re also working to describe every picture on a family’s page more fully.

Ask for help

If any part of Dearly is hard to use, please write to care@dearly.co, or reply to any email from us. Tell us what happened and what device you’re using. A real person will answer and help you finish what you set out to do.
